STEP 1: READ THE PASSAGE BELOW AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS
FEEDING THE MONSTERS
My mother makes money off a monster. She accepts the crisp notes that slide over the green baize. She returns to her home and tucks the money under her bed, like an amulet for protection. She climbs into the bed and sleeps on reassurance and security, but mediates on temporality. The next day I see her pull open the mouth of the mattress and extricate the money, like sticking her hand into the maw of a crocodile. She removes the amulet, goes to the casino , and sets it back on the green baize. Then she comes back with nothing; Rinses, repeats.

(Joke 2) An Unexpected Comment It was last week that I attended a meeting and met my wife's colleague. I barely knew her and asked how did she know me. She laughed and simply replied, "your poor wife told me so much about you." |
